run run as fast as you can...

Well, the snow is melting for some of you and for me, uh, the sun is shining brightly and its 75 degrees. (oops, did I say that out loud?) What does that mean? It’s time to get your exercise on. Yep yep… I said it! Ha ha, the big scary E word…. Ohhhhh.

So, it’s a new year. Does that mean I need new women’s running shoes? How often should I buy new shoes? What’s the right type? Dang, this is harder than buying a new car. I looked around and found out some interesting stuff. I love new info!!! Fills my brain up with more than just air, lol.

First, walking shoes or running shoes? I don’t know about you but walking shoes look funny… kinda like old lady shoes. And they are always plain white. Blah. Well, one article I found claimed that “it’s a well known fact that running shoes cannot substitute as walking shoes and vice versa” (1). Uh… I beg to differ since I didn’t know this fact. Supposedly running shoes have thicker soles and are more high tech. I can only agree with the more high tech portion. Running shoes nowadays are so thin and light, such as these shoes below, which weigh only 8.4 ounces (just a tad heavier than my Droid).

Another article says a runner should never wear walking shoes because that shoe lacks the support and cushion needed to prevent injury when running (2). Hmmm, sounds to me like it is pretty important to choose the right shoe. The way you stride when walking and running is completely different. When walking, you land on your heel and roll to your toe. Running causes you to land mid-sole or on the toes.

Ok, got it. I am gonna buy women’s running shoes. I don’t run per say, but I walk hard. And that brings me to my next question. How often should I buy running shoes? I have had my current pair for 3 years now. Is it time for them to go? It would seem obvious to me that if the threads were worn out, replace the shoe (such as a tire). However, there are more important way to tell when to buy new shoes and they are not so noticeable. If you are experiencing shin splints (raising my hand here), have joint paint (other than what may be normal if you have a joint issue such as arthritis) or feel muscle fatigue at the end of your run, then you’re shoes are shot and the cushioning in them is not good anymore. A rule of thumb is to replace shoes every 300 to 400 miles, but that also depends on many factors such as your weight, running style and more.

Now, I need a running shoe, and apparently need a new one. What kind should I get? Have you seen the options in women’s running shoes? It’s as scary as buying a pair of jeans. I think I might need help now. Let’s hit up the experts and see what they say (3). Hopefully the salesperson will ask me lots of questions about my needs and uses for the shoes. It is a must that he/she checks my foot shape and arch. A suggestion when buying a running shoe is to buy it ½ to full size larger to accommodate foot swelling. Depending on where our running shoe expert is, they might be able to do a running analysis to check my running style, i.e., does my foot turn in or out when it hits the ground. And last but not least, don’t buy the shoes just because they are pink (and pink is your favorite color, lol). Well, I am off to buy a new pair of shoes. I haven’t walked since shortly after New Year’s Day (and yes, it was a beautiful 75 degrees that day). I will be back to share my purchase. If you buy a new pair, show me, ok!!

Blog Hop for Operation Write Home

Today Operation Write Home is doing a Veteran's Day Blog Hop. The smart people at OWH decided to do the hop on the weekend so that readers will have time to sit and read the lovely posts and comment on the great cards.

If this is the first time you have heard of Operation Write Home, then let me explain it a bit. Operation Write Home is a non-profit organization that helps get handmade cards out to our soldiers. The soldiers then can send cards to their families and friends for various things. You can read more about OWH's mission HERE.

Are you interested in joining?
I joined up with OWH earlier this year for the Memorial Day Hop. As a former member of the US Navy, I think it is a wonderful idea to send out cards to those troops/sailors that are away from their family and friends and unable to go out and shop for a card. Plus, handmade cards bring a touch of home to the troops. Here are some of the cards that I am sending to OWH.

A little info on why I support OWH:
1.) I was in the US Navy myself
2.) I have many friends who are still in the Navy and get deployed often
3.) I have an aunt who is a few years older than I who was in the Navy and she is married to a Marine and they are stationed at Camp Pendelton.
4.) My grandfather was in the Army and a recipient of the Silver Star and many other awards. You can see my layout about him from last year HERE.
4.) My husband's uncles were all in the military. That is 6 brothers that followed their father's footsteps.
5.) Uncle Jimmy - who passed away last year shortly after Xmas. You can see my layouts and read my tribute to him HERE and HERE.
6.) To all those who have served and died for my freedom.

Now, head to the next blog on the HOP... It's gonna be Loni and her blog is HERE. Loni is a Stampin' Up demonstrator and has the cutest cards on her blog. In case you get lost along the way, you can return to the OWH Bloghop home page.

Thank you for stopping by and remember... no matter what your feelings are for war, it is still our family and friends out there and THEY deserve our support.

My Birthday Wish.... will you help it come true?

I normally do not mention my birthday at all. It comes and it goes. If I get a card, email or phone call... great! If not, oh well. I dont dislike growing older, its more that my birthday always happens during the time of the year when everything in my life (childhood mostly) was going bad. But this year I have chance to change all that negativity surrounding my birthday. I have made a Birthday Wish and if my wish came true then I would have the best birthday ever!

I'm turning 34 on November 9 and this year I'm donating to a good cause: Kawasaki Disease

You can read about my wish here -----> MY BIRTHDAY WISH

If you are unfamiliar with this disease, click on the HERE to find out more. A brief summary by the Mayo Clinic describes it as: Kawasaki disease, named after the physician that first identified it, is a condition that causes inflammation in the walls of small- and medium-sized arteries throughout the body, including the coronary arteries, which supply blood to the heart muscle. Kawasaki disease is also called mucocutaneous lymph node syndrome because it also affects lymph nodes, skin, and the mucous membranes inside the mouth, nose and throat.

This disease is scary... very scary. For me, my 15 month old first born son got it. I wont go into the whole long drama but let me say that when you go into the dr.'s office and they say, you need to go to Children's Hospital because something is wrong with your son's heart.... well, I still cry over this. My son healed and luckily with no anerysums but he has never been the same. I believe that the trauma to his body just changed him and maybe even caused the mild autism. I participate in as many KD studies as I can because this is horrifying to a parent, let alone the child. Please take the time to read about my wish and this cause and see if you can find it in yourself to donate so a cure can be found.

Tee Time.... FORE (watch your head)

Well, I have not been fond of blogging lately but I just had to share this kit! Its called Tee Time by Digi-Designs by Nicole and I think it is my favorite kit from her. Here is a preview of the kit and the image is linked to the shop!

My husband is a golfer... he wishes he could go pro but no money to go to the golf school. So my kids have been exposed to golf since day one. I can't tell you how many golf sets we have around here... from the small plastic ones that my 4 yo uses as weapons to the petite sized real clubs. I just wish that daddy had more time to take my oldest out to practice, after all, he does work at a golf course. But the life of a food and bev manager is a busy one with long days and nights.

Regardless, I have a ton of golf pics and scorecards to scrap so I know that I will be using this kit again and again (at least for a couple holiday gifts) and here are two layouts I made with it!

That's it about this kit. Maybe I will be back with more stuff, maybe not! I do want to share a fre other things. Education.com is having an activities photo contest. You take pics of activities you do with your kids and submit them. 100 days, 1o0 winners. You can enter HERE. I like this site for more than this contest though. I have been a member for almost 2 years now and it has lots of useful info on schools, education, worksheets and classroom fun, ways to incorporate learning into everyday fun and there are even groups you can join to connect with others like you. HERE is my profile page if you want to connect.

Another fun thing to do that helps kids who need books is to join Classrooms Care a joint effort by Scholastic and Peyton and Eli Manning. Basically the class decides which books to read and they read and pledge... 100 books by Dec 18th... that is easy. No money involved, just reading! Share this with your child's teacher and help get more schools involved!

Memorial Day Blog Hop

I saw the coolest thing on the web and decided to participate! Its a blog hop to encourage others to send cards to our troops! What better way to celebrate Memorial Day than doing something that benefits those that we are remembering!!!

Hi and Happy Memorial Day! If you have found my blog for the first time and you are hopping around on the Blog Hop, then Hello! If you randomly found yourself here, then you might want to start at the beginning of the Hop, so you can catch all the fun! Just click on the image above to start Hopping at the Top of the Hop.

The Cards for Heroes (http://cardsforheroes.org/) mission is to support our nation's armed forces by sending blank greeting cards to write home on, as well as cards of gratitude to encourage them throughout their deployment. They are an all-volunteer group of crafters. To date, Cards for Heroes has sent over 140,000 cards to our heroes serving in the Middle East. You can find more information on making and sending cards HERE.

I found this awesome blog hop thru a retweet on Twitter (you can follow me too) and am so glad that I did. I think that no matter what our opinion is on war our troops deserve to know that we care and support them! I was in the Navy (years and years ago) and one of the best things was getting mail. My grandfather was in the Army and he is the military hero that I want to mention. I had originally created this layout for Veterans Day but would like to repost it. My grandpa passed away almost 8 years ago and I still miss him. This layout reflects him, as a man and as a war hero.

Now, your next stop on this awesome blog hop is Kristina's blog. Kristina is a crafter and scrapbooker. Her blog is clean looking and lovely! I love all her flair!!!! CLICK HERE TO GO!!

Earth Day!

It's Earth Day here on Earth (the last part only applies to aliens reading this post). I am very excited this year because I get to play a special part in it. Well, its special to me. I get to talk to children and their parents about Earth Day - all day - at work! My local Disney store (not sure if this is nationwide or not) is doing a recycling program where kids can bring in 3 plastic bottles and they will get a refillable water bottle. So I get to hang out in my 100% organic cotton Earth Day T-shirt and talk, talk, talk! Very exciting for me.

If you love Disney, there is so much cute Earth Day stuff which you can find at a store near you or online. Go check it out HERE.

Don't forget to vote in my 3 polls to the left! If you are looking for QP... its 2 posts down! I will be back with new stuff on Friday.

Shopping shopping shopping

So did you have a great Christmas? Did you get lots of presents? Or are you like the rest of us and only bought for the kids this year? Yea - that was us. Even knowing that there is no other choice and that it is better to make the kids happy, sometimes it doesn't take away that sadness on Christmas morning - knowing none of the presents under the tree are for you. I did get one surprise gift though from my awesome husband. I got a box of socks (I love socks and the funkier, the better). Guess what underneath ALL those socks... a gift certificate to Digital Candy!
